Moments in Time: Stories of the Unseen

Curatorial Statement

At the heart of this exhibition lies a powerful and evocative narrative: the unseen stories of communities in Ghana, told through the lens of emerging photographers. Moments in Time: Stories of the Unseen is not just an exhibition; it's a journey that transports you into the lives, struggles, joys, and aspirations of people, communities, and overlooked issues.

This year, we proudly showcase the exceptional work of Dikan's first Photojournalism and Documentary Practice cohorts. These talented individuals have ventured into diverse communities, capturing moments that resonate with authenticity and raw emotion. Their photographs are more than mere images; they are dialogues, invitations to understand and empathize with experiences different from our own.

The exhibition is carefully curated into distinct narratives and themes, each delving into diverse aspects of life within Accra's communities. These themes encompass a broad spectrum, ranging from the experience of fatherhood and Reverend Georgina Boateng's pulpit to the aspirations of budding musicians and the vibrant world of dance crews, as well as the pressing issue of youth unemployment. Our photographers challenge stereotypes and offer new narratives of Africa with their fresh perspectives and innovative approaches.

Their work is a testament to the power of photography as a tool for social change and a medium for storytelling. It's about community. It's about young Africans telling their stories from the deepest place of sources and influence.

As we look to the future, Moments in Time: Stories of the Unseen also serves as a platform for dialogue about the role of visual storytelling and education in shaping public perception and influencing policy. It is a call to action, urging viewers to engage with the world around them, recognise every story's importance, and appreciate the diverse views of human experience.

Let these photographs move you, challenge you, and inspire you. May they leave a lasting impression and ignite a passion for understanding and appreciating the rich narratives of Africa. We, Africans, are more than capable of telling our own stories. Welcome to Moments in Time: Stories of the Unseen.
