Obama: An Intimate Portrait
18 November 2023
Our current exhibition features a selection of Pete Souza's "Obama: An Intimate Portrait." This marks Souza's first solo exhibit in Africa that will showcase carefully curated photos that offer a visual journey into the nuances of democratic governance.
Souza, an Official Photographer during Reagan’s presidency and Chief Official White House Photographer for the Obama administration, redefines media coverage importance through his lens. His work delivers honest imagery, providing a profound glimpse into the person behind the presidency. The exhibition highlights President Obama's historic presidency, emphasizing the power of visual storytelling in untangling complex narratives. Souza's images, including Obama's 2009 visit to Ghana, explore the intersection of democracy and media literacy.
In the context of Ghana's democratic process, Souza's work becomes a call for responsible media communication, advocating for accuracy, truthfulness, and transparency in storytelling. His images underscore the intrinsic links between visual storytelling and democracy. Souza's intimate images reveal the significance of government transparency and the role of visual storytelling in identifying and preserving individuals in societal roles. His work serves as a guidepost for responsible storytelling and a celebration of democracy in action.
The exhibition runs from November 18th, beginning as the concluding event of a 4-day workshop by Pete Souza and Alice Gabriner. The workshop emphasizes essential skills, knowledge, and ethical foundations for photojournalists, highlighting the indispensable role of visual storytelling in documenting impactful moments responsibly.
Moments in Time: Stories of the Unseen
9 December 2023
This exhibition features a selection of Dikan’s first graduating students’ final projects. At the heart of this exhibition lies a powerful and evocative narrative: the unseen stories of communities in Ghana, told through the lens of emerging photographers. Moments in Time: Stories of the Unseen is not just an exhibition; it's a journey that transports you into the lives, struggles, joys, and aspirations of people, communities, and overlooked issues.
The exhibition is carefully curated into distinct narratives and themes, each delving into diverse aspects of life within Accra's communities. These themes encompass a broad spectrum, ranging from the experience of fatherhood and Reverend Georgina Boateng's pulpit to the aspirations of budding musicians and the vibrant world of dance crews, as well as the pressing issue of youth unemployment. Our photographers challenge stereotypes and offer new narratives of Africa with their fresh perspectives and innovative approaches.
The exhibition runs from December 9th to February 2024.
The Youth have the Power to Transform Africa!
9 December 2023
This exhibition features a selection of photos taken by students from the Dikan Academy, in collaboration with the Canon Young People Program. Dikan achieved a significant milestone by enrolling 10 students between the ages of 13 and 15 from various communities, including La Nativity, Labone, Labadi, South La Estate, Osu, and Kaadjaano.
This initiative, spanning 10 weeks, harnessed the transformative power of storytelling. It offered these young individuals not only access to essential equipment but also the resources needed to develop their skills, capture engaging images, and express themselves and their perspectives effectively. With many of the students from the communities, this is the first time they've held a camera.
The young participants have been diligently working on individual projects that revolve around the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with a special focus on environmental issues and their communities.
The exhibition runs from December 9th to February 2024.
