Home is more than a Place

Curatorial Statement

"Home is more than a Place," delves into the multifaceted nature of home, recognizing it not merely as a physical location but as a profound feeling: a sense of belonging that transcends borders and cultures.

Through the captivating images of photographers, we invite you to embark on a visual journey, embracing the vibrant tapestry of modern African life. From the bustling streets of Accra to the serene landscapes of Ethiopia, these photographs serve as windows into the intimate moments, daily rituals, and shared joys that collectively define the essence of home. These photographers celebrate not only our diverse African perspectives and experiences but also the shared narratives that bind us together, regardless of our individual origins.

Dating back centuries, Pan-Africanism is as dynamic as the notion of home itself. It is an emotional, cultural, and political response to that which has been taken from Africans. It is an effort to both reclaim and renew. Pan-Africanism, a movement rooted in the unity of Africans in Africa and the diaspora, serves as the guiding thread throughout these images.

"Home is more than a Place" invites you to ponder the universal yearning for connection and identity through African lenses. It is an exploration and celebration of the human spirit, its strength, resilience, and complexity. May we reflect on our own understanding of home. Is it the house we grew up in, the town we left behind, or the people we hold dear? Is it a distant memory, a longing for a place we have never known, or the connection we forge with those who share our dreams and aspirations?

As you immerse yourself in the visual narratives showcased in this exhibition, may these images inspire dialogue, foster understanding, and ignite a sense of belonging that extends far beyond the confines of the gallery space.
